GMail Starts Talking
Google announced yesterday that they have integrated Google Chat with GMail. You can now chat from the GMail interface and it will also log your chats in your Gmail account for sending to people or later searching. Handily enough it will log any GTalk chats from any client, not just Gmail and GTalk. Add to that the fact that the Gmail team is promising to make their chat client an open XMPP chat implementation so you can connect to the Jabber network also and GMail has just become the new communications hub.
I think this is a wonderful synthesis of the two technologies. It will be great to have my chat logs available and searchable right from GMail. If you are anything like me your chat logs contain some really useful information, links, etc… that would be handy to have at a moment’s notice.
I am positive that the privacy advocates will be all up-at-arms about this. My response to them is simple, if you don’t like it, don’t use it. Your chat is no doubt logged on other services; they just aren’t as open about letting you use it later as Google is.
