Sony, I hate you
It just baffles me how far Sony goes to royally tick people off. As if installing rootkits on the computers of unsuspecting Windows weenies isn’t enough, now they have the next-to-impossible-to-play-on-Linux DVD.
The task is simple, watch the new Ultraviolet DVD that my sister kindly sent to me over the weekend. Being a Linux user I don’t have the joy of “official” dvd software that Windows has, this hasn’t really bothered me since I have always been able to do everything I wanted with my PC. So I pop the dvd in and start playing it with Mplayer. Nada. Zip. Black screen pops up, goes away. My that is odd, must be something wrong with the first title. Skipping to title two. Now that works… for 5 seconds! WTF… this stupid DVD just locked up Mplayer…. GAAAA. To kill mplayer I had to killall and the stick a wire in my DVD drive to pop it out.
Somewhere I remembered that certain companies used a corrupted track on their media as a “copy protection” scheme. Skipping 10 seconds into the DVD worked just nicely and I was finally able to enjoy my DVD. The thing that gets me is that this is a completely legit commercial DVD that was purchased from a big retail chain. Why is it that I am getting the shaft for buying your DVDs Sony, its a mistake I’m not likely to make again. Sony, I hate you!
I also hate Sony. They send me a refurb PSP after my first one broke. It was great until I realised it refuses to play UMDs…. I hate you Sony.
